Staying up-to-date in the rapidly changing world of technology can be extremely difficult. Often it seems like there is constant advancement which is constantly advancing. A few years ago Virtual Reality was more of a dream than a reality. The release of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are slowly ushering a new age of interactive experiences and many entertainment companies, game developers and film studios are at the forefront of expanding theses experiences. However there are many exploring Virtual Realities other possibilities; London based developer Macunx Technologies is creating a different experience using the potential of Virtual Reality, a platform for heightened learning experiences.
The Macunx platform was invented by the founder of Linguisticator, Dr Aaron Ralby working closely with Harriet Cook (executive assistant at Linguisticator) and Luciana Carvalho Se. The Macunx team inspired by medieval memory techniques used by monks and scholars are pioneering and reinventing the way we learn; using old methods of learning combined with the possibilities of modern technology.
The aim is for users to create memory palaces, virtual environments filled with information. The platform will replace visual learning with spatial learning, driven by fact that humans are spatial creatures. By using environmental and spatial learning, the focus is memory and retention. The idea is that we learn and memorise our environments; constantly relearning spaces all the time, Macunx will apply this fundamental idea to academic subjects.
There will be three modes: Free Build, Guided Build and Instructor Mode. Using Free Build will allow users to create their own memory palaces, taking control of the independent learning experience and seeing their creation come to life. For those without the experience of creating memory palaces there is Guided Build mode, the user selects a subject and is then guided through the memory techniques required to excel in absorbing the subject. Lastly the Instructor Mode, allows users with experience building memory palaces to create and market their guided builds on the Macunx platform.
Education and independent learning are pivotal to our constant progression. The human species relies on memory and while people accuse new technology of destroying the relationship between humans and memory, Macunx are creating a platform which strengthens that essential relationship.
Their recent Kickstarter campaign has achieved its initial targets and still has seven days before the campaign is over. The platform is pioneering the educational possibilities of Virtual Reality with the potential to redefine the learning experience, for those who struggle to engage with the current system as well as people suffering from learning difficulties.
